Position Description
Job Summary
Provides the full range of nursing care to psychiatric patients in an inpatient setting in the Department of Nursing, at Saint Elizabeths Hospital. Participates with the interdisciplinary team in formulating, evaluating, and revising the total treatment plan. Administers appropriate medication and treatment. Also, may provide face-to-face counseling services to the individual consumer, groups, or family members for symptom and behavior management, development, restoration or enhancement of adaptive behaviors and skills; and enhancement or maintenance of daily living skills. Provides comprehensive nursing care for complex psychiatric Provides and guides nursing staff in the implementation of complex nursing interventions. Lead therapeutic groups with patients and co-lead therapeutic groups with other nursing staff to guide them in the development of their group skills.
This position IS in the collective bargaining unit represented by D.C. Nurse’s Association (DCNA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through an automatic payroll deduction
Tour of Duty: Rotating Shifts (including weekends)
Area of Consideration: Open to the Public
First Screening: December 1, 2025; and every two weeks thereafter
Duration of Appointment: Career Appointment (Permanent)

Qualifications: One (1) year of the required specialized professional nursing experience as a Registered Nurse must be sufficiently related to Psychiatric nursing in a hospital setting. Minimum qualification requirement determinations are based on the following education coupled with experience listed below.

Education: Experience:
Associate Degree Program 3 years RN Experience
Baccalaureate Degree Program 2 years RN Experience
Work Experience: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, this position requires one (1) year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level equivalent to DS-07.
Licensures, Certification and other requirements: Applicants must be currently licensed as a Registered Nurse with the District of Columbia (or have made application for licensure).
This position is designated as Essential. As an Essential employee, you will be required to report to work or stay at work during a declared emergency.
Work Environment
Work is in a controlled environment and involves some exposure to moderate risk of accidents and requires following basic safety precautions.

A person applying for a position in the Career Service, Educational Service, Management Supervisory Service, a line attorney position in the Legal Service (series 905), or an attorney position in the Excepted Service (series 905) who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.
